Sensate Flap Reconstruction

Restoring not only the shape of the breast, but also the possibility of sensation.

Understanding Sensate Flap Breast Reconstruction

One of the most common concerns women have after breast reconstruction is the loss of feeling in the reconstructed breast. A sensate flap reconstruction is an advanced technique designed to help restore sensation by reconnecting small nerves during surgery.

In traditional flap reconstruction, skin and fat from another part of the body are used to create a natural breast mound. While this approach provides a soft, natural look and feel, the transferred tissue may initially be numb because the nerves are no longer connected. A sensate flap procedure addresses this by carefully connecting a sensory nerve from the donor tissue to a nerve in the chest during reconstruction.

This process, known as nerve coaptation, allows the body to gradually regenerate nerve connections over time. Studies have shown that when these nerves are connected, patients often experience improved sensory recovery and a greater return of protective sensation compared to reconstructions where the nerves are not repaired.

Sensate reconstruction is most commonly performed during natural tissue procedures such as the DIEP flap, although it can be incorporated into other flap techniques as well. By reconnecting nerves during surgery, the goal is to help the reconstructed breast regain the ability to sense touch, pressure, or temperature as healing progresses.

Sensation does not return immediately after surgery. Nerve regeneration takes time, and feeling typically improves gradually over months as the nerves heal and reconnect. Many patients begin to notice changes in sensation during the first year following reconstruction.

For many women, the possibility of restoring feeling can play an important role in overall well-being after breast reconstruction. Sensate flap techniques represent an important advancement in reconstructive surgery by focusing not only on appearance, but also on helping the breast feel more natural over time.

FAQ's about Sensate Flap Breast Reconstruction

The nerve repair adds a small amount of time to the procedure, but it is performed using the same microsurgical techniques already used in natural tissue reconstruction. For experienced microsurgeons like Dr. Hugo, it is a natural extension of the procedure.

Every patient heals differently. While sensation may not return completely to what it was before surgery, many patients experience improved sensation and protective feeling compared to reconstructions where nerves are not reconnected.

Traditional flap reconstruction focuses on restoring the shape of the breast using your own tissue. A sensate flap adds an additional step where a small sensory nerve from the flap is connected to a nerve in the chest, helping sensation return over time.
