What Is DIEP Flap Reconstruction?

DIEP stands for Deep Inferior Epigastric Perforator – which refers to the tiny blood vessels used in this technique. During surgery, we gently transfer skin and fat from the lower abdomen to rebuild the breast. The tissue feels soft, looks natural, and is warmed by your own blood supply. Unlike older procedures, DIEP flap surgery spares the abdominal muscles, helping to maintain core strength and reduce recovery time.

Here’s how it works:

• A slim incision is made low on the abdomen, similar to a tummy tuck.

• Skin and fat, along with small feeding blood vessels, are carefully removed.

• Under a microscope, these vessels are connected to healthy vessels in the chest to restore blood flow to the new breast.

• Later, the nipple and areola can be reconstructed to complete the process.
