Making More Options Possible: How Surgical Delay Can Support Your Breast Reconstruction
Helping Your Body Prepare for a Stronger, Safer Surgery
At Florida Breast Center, we’re always looking for ways to make natural breast reconstruction available to more women – especially those who may have been told they weren’t candidates in the past. One of the advanced techniques we use to do this is called surgical delay.
Here’s what that means in simple terms:
Before your main breast reconstruction procedure, we may recommend a small, carefully timed procedure that helps prepare your tissue for what’s ahead. This early step gives your body time to strengthen the blood flow in the area we plan to use – usually your lower belly. Over the next few days or weeks, your blood vessels adapt and become more robust, making the tissue healthier and more resilient for surgery.
This technique can make a big difference. It allows us to safely use tissue that might not have been viable otherwise, and gives you a better chance at a natural, long-lasting result with your own body’s tissue.
Not every center offers this approach – but we believe in giving you every possible advantage for healing and success. Surgical delay is one more way we personalize your care and help you move forward with confidence.
If you’ve been told in the past that you weren’t a candidate for flap-based breast reconstruction, we’d be happy to take a fresh look and walk you through your options.
