Preparing for Reconstructive Breast Surgery
How to prepare for your reconstructive surgical procedure
At Florida Breast Center, we believe that thoughtful preparation can make a meaningful difference in both your surgical outcome and your recovery. Below is a guide to help you get ready for your upcoming procedure. Please read carefully, follow each step, and don’t hesitate to reach out to our team with any questions.
Medications: What to Avoid, What’s Safe
Two weeks before surgery, please stop taking any medications that can increase bleeding risk or interfere with healing. These include:
-
Aspirin or aspirin-containing products
-
Ibuprofen (e.g., Advil, Motrin) and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
-
Herbal supplements (e.g., ginkgo biloba, garlic, ginseng, turmeric, St. John’s wort, fish oil)
You may continue to take acetaminophen (Tylenol) as needed for minor pain or discomfort.
You’ll find a detailed list of medications to avoid in your pre-op information packet. If you are taking any medication not prescribed by Florida Breast Center, or if you’re unsure whether something is safe to continue, please call us before your surgery date.
Smoking: Why Quitting Is Critical
Do not smoke for at least 6 months prior to surgery and for 6 weeks after. This includes all tobacco products, vaping devices, nicotine patches, and secondhand smoke exposure.
Smoking constricts blood vessels and reduces oxygen flow to the tissues, which can lead to serious complications. It significantly increases the risk of wound healing problems, tissue loss (necrosis), and delayed recovery. Flap procedures like DIEP, SGAP, or APEX depend on healthy blood supply, so staying smoke-free is essential to protecting your reconstruction.
If you’re struggling to quit, let us know – we’re happy to recommend support resources.
Skin Prep: Reducing Infection Risk
To lower the risk of infection, we recommend the following pre-surgery cleansing routine:
-
Wash your body from shoulders to thighs with Hibiclens (chlorhexidine) soap or Dial antibacterial soap during the two days before surgery.
-
Focus on areas where your surgical incisions will be made, including the chest, abdomen, or thighs (depending on your procedure).
-
Do not use Hibiclens on your face, near your eyes, or on sensitive areas.
-
Hibiclens is available over the counter at most pharmacies and does not require a prescription.
Sleep and Pre-Op Comfort
If you’ve been prescribed a sleep aid by your surgeon, you may take it the night before surgery unless instructed otherwise. Getting a good night’s sleep helps reduce stress and supports healing.
Please avoid alcohol and heavy meals the night before your procedure. Drink plenty of water throughout the day leading up to surgery, unless you’ve been given fasting instructions.
Required Lab Work and Forms
Before your surgery, we’ll need recent lab work to ensure it’s safe to proceed. This may include basic blood tests, EKG, and any other screenings relevant to your medical history.
Important notes:
-
We will review lab requirements with you at your consultation or pre-op visit.
-
All required labs must be completed and submitted at least 9 days before surgery.
-
Please make sure the results are faxed to both the hospital and our office – we’ll provide the correct numbers and forms.
Illness or Symptoms Before Surgery
If you develop a cold, fever, respiratory symptoms, stomach virus, or any other illness in the days before your surgery, please call our office right away. Even mild symptoms can impact your body’s ability to heal and may require us to delay surgery for your safety. For this reason it is wise to limit exposure to other people the week prior to surgery. You should also consider wearing a mask in public areas like airports and airplanes to limit exposure to germs and viruses.
Additional Tips for a Smooth Experience
-
Plan for recovery: Prepare your home with easy meals, soft clothing, and any items you’ll need within arm’s reach. Arrange for help with household tasks during the first few days post-op.
-
Bring your paperwork: On the day of surgery, have your ID, insurance card, and any completed forms with you.
-
Follow all fasting instructions: We will let you know when to stop eating and drinking before surgery – typically nothing by mouth after midnight the night before.
